Forklift Truck Lessons — Complete Theory (18)
Full training content covering EU regulations, safety, equipment use, stability, load handling, driver requirements, maintenance, and emergency actions.
1Introduction: purpose, benefits & risks
Forklifts reduce manual effort and improve logistics, but introduce risks such as overturning, load falls, entrapments, and noise. Proper training is essential.
2Legal framework: EU directives & employer duties
Directive 89/655/EEC, Law 31/1995, and RD 1215/1997 require safe equipment, risk assessments, and operator training. PPE is mandatory.
3Use of equipment & worker obligations
Only trained operators may use forklifts. Safety signage, traffic rules, and machine checks are mandatory. Workers must report anomalies.
4Forklift basics: structure & main components
Key parts: chassis, counterweight, mast, carriage, forks, engine, transmission, wheels, and steering.
5Safety elements: seat, ROPS, brakes & lights
Includes seat belts, overhead guard, braking systems, anti-restart devices, and warning lights/signals.
6Manufacturer requirements & CE marking
Every forklift must display a CE mark, identification plate, and load chart. Accessories need certification.
7Types of forklifts & classifications
Internal combustion, electric, counterbalance, reach trucks, stackers, telescopic handlers, etc.
8Work environment & human factor
Safe circulation routes, pedestrian separation, lighting, and alert drivers reduce risks.
9Stability triangle & load center
The forklift’s stability depends on the load’s center of gravity within the stability triangle. Overloading can cause tip-overs.
10Driver requirements & responsibilities
Minimum age 18, medical fitness, and full training. Operators must act responsibly and never allow unauthorized use.
11Pre-use checks & controls
Inspect brakes, steering, hydraulics, tires, and lights. Operate only when safe.
12Traffic rules & workplace safety
Respect speed limits, use marked lanes, and follow site-specific rules for ramps and parking.
13Load handling: lifting, stacking & transport
Lift smoothly, avoid sudden movements, never exceed load capacity, and always check load stability.
14Working on ramps & uneven ground
Drive forward uphill and backward downhill. Avoid turns and always keep the load uphill.
15Parking & shutdown procedures
Lower forks, neutralize controls, set parking brake, and switch off the engine when leaving the truck.
16Maintenance & operator checks
Daily checks include oil, coolant, tires, and hydraulics. Report and fix faults immediately.
17Risks & accident prevention
Common risks: overturns, collisions, falling loads, pedestrian accidents. Prevent through training and safety culture.
18Emergency actions & first aid
In case of accident: stop the machine, secure the area, call emergency services, and give first aid if trained.
